IEC Holds Sensitization Training for Media, CSO's Ahead of Parliamentary Election

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has on Wednesday 2nd March 2022, convened a daylong training with media practitioners and Civil Society Organisations (CSO's,) as part of it's efforts to raise awareness of the role of the media and Civil Society Organisations ahead of the Parliamentary and local government elections. 


The event held at the Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute (GTHI), in Kanifing brought together IEC officials, media practitioners and Civil Society Organisations to dilate on the IEC code of conduct during covering election. 


Hannah Forster, the Chair of CSO Coalition on election highlights the significance of the training ahead of the election. 


“The training is part of IEC hallmark to ensure that their is a capacity building for its partners most especially the media and the CSO, to ensure that they participate in the process of election” she remarked.


Alieu Ceesay, board member of the Gambia Press Union (GPU) reminds journalists' of their watchdog roles to report objectively and fairly during covering Parliamentary election. 


Alieu Moamar Njai, Chairman of the electoral body described the event as a key milestone ahead of the Parliamentary election. He further urges the media and the Civil Society Organisations to report fairly during covering election.


“The training is part of the electoral commission's efforts to sensitize the media and the CSO of their roles to ensure free and fair election” he concluded.

Mr Essa Dampha, the outspoken aide on media for President Adama Barrow, asserted that the President has the prospects of winning the 2026 election with a landslide.

He justified his argument on the basis that the President has achieved monumental gains in terms of delivery adequately responding to the plights of the Gambian People.

Mr. Dampha also described President Barrow as a problem solver, not a firefighter er, emphasizing that his principle is to investigate the genesis of the problem and find a duration solution to it.

“his development trajectory is more like a problem solver, not a firefighter. When there is a problem, he reacts quickly and finds out the root course of that problem. He worked on that and found a solution. He is a proactive leader.” he remarked. 

Reacting to the recent allegations of vote rigging by the NPP, Mr Dampha said the government has distanced itself from such irresponsible and baseless allegations. He commended the charismatic Information Minister Dr Ismailia Ceesay, who applauded him for changing the government information flow dynamics.
