LG Elections: UDP sweeps major seats in the local gov't elections

    By Amo Manneh The United Democratic Party (UDP) has won the Mayoral seat of Banjul, the Kanifing Municipal Council, the Chairman seat of both West Coast Region and Lower River Region respectively.  Election results Ahmed Talib Bensouda of UDP has 56,094 votes while his main opponent Bakary Y. Badjie has 42, 432 votes. The independent candidate  has 5,092 votes.  In Banjul City Council, Rohey malick  Lowe has 8,299 votes  an NPP'S Ebou Faye  has 6,992 votes. In Brikama Area council, UDP'S Yankuba Darboe has 77,946 votes; Jainaba Bah of PPP has 2,023 votes; Ibrahim J.S Sanneh,  has 24,558; Baisey Sawo, independent  candidate  has 1,183 votes; Salieu Jallow,  independent candidate has 1,022, Ahmed Gitteh, independent has 6,718,  Seedy Ceesay of NPP has 51,429 votes. By Amo Manneh The National People's Party (NPP) in the ongoing Local Government Elections has won all the provincial  administrative area councils.   The party won the chairmanship of Janjangbureh, Basse, Kuntaur and Kerewan  Administrative Council respectively. Election  Results In Janjangbureh Administrative area,Sulayman Sawaneh of NPP has 11, 924 votes. Malick Sowe, of United Democratic Party (UDP)  has 8, 225 votes; Haruna of Gambia Democratic Congress has 2,614 votes and Alhagie AS  Boye, an independent candidate  has 1, 458 votes. In Kuntaur Area Council, NPP's Saihou Jawara has 13,681 votes; UDP's Alhagie SB Sillah has 10, 365 votes, and GFA's Abdoulie Keita has 1, 227 votes. By Sheriff Saidykhan Flex Fuzion Entertainment, and performing arts Company has on Saturday 13 May, 2023 graduated its second cohort of trainess into performing arts.  The graduants successfully completed performing arts and entrepreneurship training funded by the U.S. Embassy in Banjul.  The project was designed to equip young and aspiring performing artists with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the business world. The participants completed an intensive three months program in dance, music, modelling and theatre.  The ceremony held at the Alliance Française ground, was attended by Sharon L Croner, the U.S Ambassador to The Gambia and people from different walks of life.  Speaking at the event, Ndéy Fatou Jabang, the Founder of Flex Fuzion expressed delight and extended gratitude to the U.S embassy in Banjul for their show of support. MCG Trains Journalists On Election Reporting

By Sheriff Saidykhan The Media Council of The Gambia (MCG) in partnership with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has on Friday 12, May 2023 trained 20 Journalists from various media houses  on election reporting.  The two day capacity building training is geared towards equipping Journalists on ethical reporting ahead of the Mayoral and Chairperson election.  Speaking at the event held at TANGO, the Vice President of the Gambia Press Union Isatou Keita underscored the significance of ethical reporting during elections.   “The media plays a crucial role in informing citizens and holding those in power accountable. Readers could that, the recent ‘veil’ banning in some Christian based school's have sparked a nationwide debate across different social strata, over religious tolerance and vis-à-vis school's code of conduct. The Christian Council said it is fully aware of the deregatory and unhealthy remarks made by Momodou Sabally. Peace Network wants IEC to rise bar higher for Mayor, Presidential, Parlimentary Contenders

  By Amo Manneh  Peace Network, a non profit organisation called the Indepedent Electoral Commission (IEC) to increase the requirement and qualifications for Councilorship, Mayoral, National Assembly and Presidential aspiring candidates in the country. Accroding to Alasana Justice Jallow Chief Executive Officer of Peace Network, the qualifications for councilorship should be graded with Senior Secondary School Certificate with at least three credits. He added that, the qualifications for mayoral candiatates should be undergraduate degree or Higher National Diploma whilst parliamentarian or presidential candidates should have a minium of first-degree.  He made these remarks on Wednesday during the Peace Network recommendation statement ahead of the local government election. The United Democratic Party (UDP) is the largest opposition party in the Gambia formed in 1996.
