LG committee concludes public hearings on rent bill

The Local Government committee have recently concluded a nationwide public hearings on the draft rent bill.


The consultation hearings started from Banjul, West Coast, Lower River Region, Upper River Region and Central River Region of the country. 


The committee held country wide public hearings on the draft rent bill. 


The committee convened twelve public meetings, and public concerned were raised on the exorbitant rent charges.

The committee also tabled wide range of discussions ranging from agent issues, tenants and deposits.


The committee put together a report capturing all the concerns. The report will be laid before parliament on the 5th of March 2024.


The amendments will look at key areas of the bill. The annual increament of not less than five per cent.


Madi MK Ceesay, National Assembly member for Serrekunda West, said if the law come into force it will will “control that, and the issue of deposit will also be captured and address. 


The issue of payments in advance which is classified under low cost and high cost of the 2014 rent bill, is taken 3,000 as a low cost.


 Now this new bill is adjust to 7,000. Now people who are paying rent rate of 7,000 downwards will only pay month to month and not accumulative” he concluded.

Mr Essa Dampha, the outspoken aide on media for President Adama Barrow, asserted that the President has the prospects of winning the 2026 election with a landslide.

Mr. Dampha also described President Barrow as a problem solver, not a firefighter er, emphasizing that his principle is to investigate the genesis of the problem and find a duration solution to it.

“his development trajectory is more like a problem solver, not a firefighter. When there is a problem, he reacts quickly and finds out the root course of that problem. He worked on that and found a solution. He is a proactive leader.” he remarked. 

Reacting to the recent allegations of vote rigging by the NPP, Mr Dampha said the government has distanced itself from such irresponsible and baseless allegations. He commended the charismatic Information Minister Dr Ismailia Ceesay, who applauded him for changing the government information flow dynamics.
